DUANE BRYERS
The cartoonist, illustrator and Western-themed painter has drawn his
comic strip character, "Cokey".
Inscribed Original Art Signed: "Best wishes to/Leo McPeak/'Cokey'
and Duane/Bryers", 5x3½. He has drawn Cokey in a bow tie. Duane Bryers
(1911-2012) was in his fifties when he transitioned from commercial
illustrator to critically acclaimed Western-themed painter. He had a
nationally syndicated comic strip, "Cokey" (1943-1946). A popular
calendar artist for Bigelow & Brown, he created annual pinup-style
calendars from 1957 to 1970 featuring Hilda, a plump redhead. Later, his
Western-themed calendar art was in great demand. In 1974 he published a
humorous book of illustrations, Bunkhouse Boys of the Lazy Daisy Ranch.
Bryers told an interviewer that his original art sold so quickly that he seldom
had enough paintings on hand for a one-man show, but his art was featured
annually at the National Cowboy Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City, and at the
Western Heritage Show in Houston. Toned. Adhesive residue and pencil note
(unknown hand) on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
