DUKE ALBRECHT OF BAVARIA
Signature of the Pretender to the throne of Bavaria, collected in 1969
Signature: "Herzog Albrecht Bayern" [Duke Albert of Bavaria], 6¾x3. Typed note above signature (in German, translated): "For the autograph collection of Mr. William Wray". Ink caption (unknown hand). Ink note (illegible signer): "collected 1969". Duke Albrecht of Bavaria (1905-1996), the son of Crown Prince Rupprecht and the grandson of King Ludwig III, the last reigning King of Bavaria, deposed in 1918. King Ludwig never actually abdicated, although he did release all Bavarian officials from their oath of loyalty to him. A monarchist movement survived in Bavaria, and during the 1930s it gathered momentum because the House of Wittelsbach was anti-Nazi. When Hitler took power, Duke Albrecht fled with his family to Hungary, where they were later captured by the Nazis and imprisoned. Duke Albrecht was released from Dachau by Allied troops in 1945. Duke Albrecht was not only the heir to the throne of Bavaria, he was also recognized by the Jacobite movement as King of Great Britain, in the line descended from the Stuart kings. (The family distances itself from the Stuart claims, but both presumed claims passed on Albrecht's death to his eldest son, Duke Franz (b. 1933). Light surface creases. Lightly toned. Fine condition.
