Signature: "Duke Ellington", 3x1½ card. Edward "Duke" Ellington (1899-1974) employed the influences of blues, jazz, bop and ragtime to become one of the greatest African-American composers of the 20th century. He composed over 6,000 works, including "Mood Indigo", "Sophisticated Lady" (1933), "Ko-Ko" (1940), "Take the 'A' Train" (1941), "Beggar's Holiday" (1946) and the theme from Paris Blues (1960). His many honors included the Presidential Medal of Freedom (1969). In 2009, Ellington became the first African-American to appear along on a circulating US coin (the "tails" side of the District of Columbia quarter). Mounting remnants on verso, no show-through. Fine condition.
