DUKE ELLINGTON
Signing as witness to the purchase of "Dual Highway" by Tempo Music
Document signed: "Duke Ellington" as Witness, 4 pages, 8½x11. New York, N.Y., 1958 April 1. Agreement between Tempo Music, Inc. and Johnny Hodges, writer of the song "Dual Highway," transferring exclusive rights to the publisher. Edward "Duke" Ellington (1899-1974) employed the influences of blues, jazz, bop and ragtime to become one of the greatest composers of the 20th century. He composed over 6,000 works, including "Mood Indigo" (1930), "Sophisticated Lady" (1933), "Ko-Ko" (1940), "Take the 'A' Train" (1941), "Beggar's Holiday" (1946) and the theme from Paris Blues (1960). His many honors included the Presidential Medal of Freedom (1969). In 2009, Ellington became the first African-American to appear along on a circulating US coin (the "tails" side of the District of Columbia quarter). Tempo Music Publishing was founded in 1938, originally to preserve and promote the music of Jelly Roll Morton. Johnny Hodges was first alto sax in Ellington's orchestra for many years, and Ellington wrote several compositions especially for him. Paper clip imprint at top edge. Corners lightly worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
