DUKE OF CAMBRIDGE - AUTOGRAPH - HFSID 167063
Price: $320.00
GEORGE, DUKE OF CAMBRIDGE
Clipped signature: "Cambridge", 2x½. George, Duke of Cambridge
(1819-1904), was the only son of King George III's seventh son, Adolphus
Frederick. His sister, Mary Adelaide, was the mother of Queen Mary, mother of
Kings George VI and Edward VIII. He commanded a division in the Crimean War
(1854) and was present at all the major battles of that conflict with Russsia.
The Duke of Cambridge was commander in chief of the British army for 39 years
(1856-1895), longer than anyone else in history. In that position he
consistently opposed innovation, and was said to promote officers on the basis
of social standing rather than ability. In defiance of British law he married a
commoner, actress Louisa Fairbrother. Irregularly cut. Fine
condition.
