NEW YORK WORLD SERIES HEROES, 1954-1956: DUSTY RHODES, JOHNNY PODRES
and DON LARSEN
Color 19½x15¾ publicity photograph of Dusty Rhodes, Johnny Podres,
and Don Larsen.
Composite Photograph signed: "Dusty Rhodes/1954 WS MVP/NY
Giants", "Johnny Podres/1955 WS MVP/Brooklyn Dodgers" and
"Don Larsen/1956 WS MVP/NY Yankees". Color, 19½x15¾. ©2000, Photo File,
Inc. Headed: "New York's World Series Heroes". Years that each signer was
a World Series MVP imprinted above action images, names of their respective home
fields imprinted beneath images. The years from 1949-1956 were a
Golden Age of baseball for New York City. Over that eight-year stretch, a
New York team was in the World Series every year. In six of those years,
both Leagues were represented by a New York franchise. While none of these three
players were Hall of Famers, nor the best players on their teams during the
regular season, each rose to the challenge of the fall classic. In 1954,
pinch hitter DUSTY RHODES powered the Giants to a four-game sweep of the favored
Cleveland Indians with four hits, including two homers, in six at bats
against the formidable Indians pitching staff, driving in six runs. In 1955,
JOHNNY PODRES pitched two Series victories, including a 2-0 shutout in Game 7,
to give Brooklyn its first (and last) World Series triumph after five prior
losses to their Bronx rivals. In 1956, it was the Yankee fans' turn to
cheer. On October 8, DON LARSEN retired 27 Dodgers in a row, pitching
that extreme rarity, a perfect game, the only no-hitter in World Series
history. The Yankees won the Series that year four games to three. New
York baseball suffered a stunning setback after the 1957 season, when the
Dodgers and Giants departed New York for the West Coast, resettling in Los
Angeles and San Francisco, respectively. The Yankees continued to dominate the
American League until the mid-1960s, but not until 1969 would the NL again be
represented by a New York team, the Mets. Authenticating hologram in lower right
corner. Fine condition. Framed, not in the Gallery of History style:
21½x17¾. Not reviewed by us for conservation integrity. "As is" framing
