Topps checklist card for the 1957 New York Giants signed by Dusty
Rhodes
Sports Card signed: "Dusty Rhodes". Color, 3½x2½. Topps card
no. 19, the 1957 New York Giants team photo. Rhodes (1927-2009)played for the New York (1952-1957) and San Francisco (1959) Giants. In
the 1954 World Series, he almost single-handedly led the Giants' sweep of the
Cleveland Indians. His pinch homer off Bob Lemon with two on in the tenth
inning won Game One, 5-2. With the score 2-2, Willie Mays had kept the game
close with his over-the-head catch of Vic Wertz's 462-foot drive in the eighth
inning. In Game Two, Rhodes tied the game with a pinch single off Early Wynn
in the fifth and then homered off Wynn in the seventh for the final run in a 3-1
win. His pinch single in the third inning of Game Three drove in two runs.
In the four game sweep, Dusty Rhodes was 4-for-6 with two homers and seven RBI.
This card will have extra poignancy for New Yorkers, since 1957 was the last
year the baseball Giants played in that city before moving to San Francisco. On
verso, pencil shading of cards obtained by a collector from the Topps "first
series" checklist for 1957. Overall, fine condition.
