The novelist writes a letter responding to a fan saying "I'm very pleased that you liked my story and send you my good wishes."
Typed Letter signed: "EL Doctorow", 1 page, 7x10. Sag Harbor, New York, 2001 September 25. On personal letterhead to a Mr. Robert Rumely. In full: "Belated thanks for your letter of August 7th and the lovely anecdote of your mother's defense of the family name. I'm very pleased that you liked my story and send you my good wishes." Edgar Lawrence Doctorow's novels were known for their manipulations of traditional genres. His Welcome to Hard Times (1960) was a "philosophical western," while Big as Life (1966) was a take-off on science fiction. World's Fair won the National Book Award (1986). Billy Bathgate (1989) and The March (2005) won PEN/Faulkner awards. Other noteworthy Doctorow's novels include The Book of Daniel (1971), the story of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg; and Ragtime, his most commercially successful work, inspiring a successful film and play. Drink's Before Dinner was Doctorow's first play. Multiple mailing folds. Fine condition
