Edgar Lawrence Doctorow's novels were known for their manipulations of traditional genres. His Welcome to Hard Times (1960) was a "philosophical western," while Big as Life (1966) was a take-off on science fiction. World's Fair won the National Book Award (1986). Billy Bathgate (1989) and The March (2005) won PEN/Faulkner awards. Other noteworthy Doctorow's novels include The Book of Daniel (1971), the story of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg; and Ragtime, his most commercially successful work, inspiring a successful film and play.
