E.L. DOCTOROW
Excerpt from his best-selling 1975 novel, Ragtime
Typescript signed: "E L Doctorow", 1p, 6x9. An excerpt from
his best-selling 1975 novel, Ragtime. In part: "In the bright
floodlit street the black man was said by the police to have made a dash for
freedom. More probably he knew that all he must do in order to end his life was
to turn his head abruptly or lower his hands or smile...." EDGAR LAURENCE
DOCTOROW set his fourth novel, which he described as "fictive nonfiction", at
the turn of the century. Told in four parts, as rag music is structured,
Ragtime is the story of three diverse characters - an
African-American, an immigrant and a housewife - who want a part of the American
dream. Although laced with the social criticism for which Doctorow is famous,
the novel was adapted as a Broadway musical, opening in January 1998. Fine
condition.
