E. MERRILL ROOT
Hardcover copy of his poetry collection Before the Swallow Dares, signed on blank flyleaf
Book signed: "E Merrill Root", 5½x8½, 109 pages. Before the Swallow Dares, by E. Merrill Root. Chicago: Packard and Company, 1947. Hardcover with dust jacket. Book plate: "From the Library of Alice Josephine Wyatt". E. Merrill Root (1895-1973), a professor of English at Earlham College for 40 years, was a Quaker pacifist and conscientious objector in his youth, but became a staunch conservative and anti-communist as he grew older. He was particularly known for his claim that US teachers and textbooks were indoctrinating students in collectivist ideology. He published twelve volumes of poems, including the work offered here, and five books of nonfiction prose, beginning with Brainwashing in the High Schools. After retiring from teaching he became an editor of American Opinion, the magazine of the John Birch Society. Dust cover worn and chipped at all edges and corners. Book cover worn at spine, top and bottom. Pages toned at edges but binding tight.
