TREASURY OFFICIALS OF THE CLEVELAND ADMINISTRATION
Album leaf signed by four officials from President Cleveland's first term,
including E. P. Baldwin, who would be First Auditor in the second
Signatures: "J. A. Jewell/Supervising Special Agent/Treasury Department",
"w. w. Malur/Asst. Chief Div. Spec. Agts" , "F.Harris/Office
Superintendent/Treasury Department" and "E. P. Baldwin/Deputy
First Auditor/Dec 31st 1888", and an unidentified signature,6¾x8¼
album leaf. Grover Cleveland, the 22nd and 24th President was a conservative
Democrat who favored adherence to the gold standard to prevent inflation, low
tariffs, and strict austerity in government. The Treasury Department in
Cleveland first term, headed by Secretary Daniel Manning and then Charles
Fairchild, thus faced a problem unfamiliar to Americans in the 21st century: an
enormous surplus. Of the signers here, most is known about E. P.
BALDWIN (1850-1897), a Maryland Democrat who would become First Auditor in
the second Cleveland administration (1893-1897). Baldwin would boast, when
leaving office in 1897, that the Treasury Department had no debts
outstanding! This in spite of the severe depression which had begun in 1893.
Baldwin died the following year of appendicitis. Left edge notched from previous
binding. Edges lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
