E. ROSS ADAIR
He signs as Member of Congress from Indiana on this 5x3 card
Printed Card Signed in Ink: "E. Ross Adair/Indiana". 5x3 index
card with typed caption above and below signature. E. Ross Adair
(1907-1983) was a Republican Member of Congress from Indiana
(1951-1971). After losing his bid for an 11th term in 1970, he was named US
Ambassador to Ethiopia (1971-1974). Adair may have found that assignment
"pleasant and stimulating" in 1971, or he may have just been writing as a
diplomat, but the experience was soon to change. In the wake of economic
disruptions, including a famine which cost 200,000 lives, the government of
Emperor Haile Selassie was overthrown in 1974 by a radical military junta which
launched a genocidal "red terror" and a disastrous war with neighboring
Somalia. Soviet military aid poured into Ethiopia and the US - not for the last
time - switched clients in the Horn of Africa, backing the Somalis. Delta
Sigma Phi fraternity, founded in 1899, currently has 118 chapters at US
colleges and universities nationwide, plus 18 alumni associations. Lightly
soiled and creased. Paper residue (previous mounting) on verso - no show
through. Otherwise, fine condition.
