Typed Letter Signed: “E. Stanley Jones” in black ink. 1p, 8½x11. December 7, 1968. Eli
Stanley Jones (1884-1973) was a Christian missionary and theologian. A member of the
Methodist faith, Jones is noted for his interreligious lectures, which he performed for the
upper classes in India. He supported the cause of Indian self-determination and befriended
members of the Nehru family, including Mohandas K. Gandhi. He also wrote several
books; his Mahatma Gandhi: An Interpretation (1948), which Martin Luther King Jr. has said
influenced his non-violence. Jones was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize and in 1963 he
received the Gandhi Peace Award. THERON C. LIDDLE (1912-1977) was a writer who
published a series titled A Thought for Today throughout the 1960s, encompassing a total of
five volumes. He was managing editor at the Deseret News from 1949-1971. Two horizontal
