EARL CARROLL
Handwritten note written during the performance of Myrus, "the man with the
X-ray eyes"
Autograph Note signed: "A really/splendid artist/Earl Carroll", 4x5.
Written on a card intended for questions for the audience at a Hollywood
performance by "Myrus, the Wizard of Mental Telepathy." Earl Carroll
(1893-1948) was a Broadway producer and songwriter, Flo Ziegfeld's
principal rival in the staging of musical extravaganzas. Carroll's shows were a
bit racier than Ziegfeld's, earning him the sobriquet, "troubadour of the
nude." He built the first Earl Carroll Theatre in 1922, replacing it with a
grander one in 1931. He opened another theater in Hollywood in 1938. Carroll
wrote many musical numbers for his productions. He spent six months in prison
during Prohibition for furnishing a nude beauty in a bathtub filled with illegal
booze at a party he gave to honor one of his investors, Harry Thaw (slayer of
architect Stanford White). Elsie Myrus, the wife of Myrus "the mental
telepathist," collected autographs from celebrities attending her husband's
shows, on forms used to ask Myrus a question. Lightly toned. Fine condition.
