EARL "FATHA" HINES. Inscribed photograph signed: "To John/&/Bob/Keep Smilin/Earl/'Fatha'/ Hines". Color, 3½x5. Signed on verso. Ink note in lower left (unknown hand); "5-27-75". A brilliant jazz pianist who also composed and led his own band, Hines (1903-1983) frequently worked with Louis Armstrong. Among the songs he wrote and performed are "Rosetta", "My Monday Date" and "You Can Depend on Me". Hines was among the first of the established band leaders to encourage and perform with avante garde jazz performers like Charlie Parker. Somewhat forgotten in the 1950s, Hines gave a hugely successful series of concerts in New York (1964) which led to renewed critical acclaim, world tours and many recordings. Printed Kodak logo touches "Smilin". Otherwise, fine condition.
