EARL W. RINER
Signed photo of the USS Arizona aflame in Pearl Harbor, signed by one of the 2223 survivors. Riner's passing on March 9, 2012, left only 13 crewmen still alive.
Photograph signed: "Earl W. Riner/ Pearl Harbor USS Arizona/survivor". B/w, 11x8½. The surprise Japanese air assault on the US fleet at Pearl Harbor (December 7, 1941) sank the US battleship Arizona, which remains in the harbor as a monument today. Only 223 members of the 1,400-member crew survived the attack that day. Gunner's mate Earl W. Riner, just two days past his twentieth birthday, had has uniform burned away, and was hospitalized for months with severe burns. He returned to sea in 1944 aboard the USS Lake Champlain. After leaving the navy, Riner worked as a civilian US Air Force employee, and in retirement raised thoroughbred dogs. His death on March 9, 2012 left only 13 surviving members of the Arizona's crew. Lightly creased at bottom left corner. Otherwise, fine condition.
