Photograph signed: "Earl Hagen". B/w, 10x8 reprint. Earle Hagen (1919-2008) was a trombonist with the big bands of Tommy Dorsey, Benny Goodman and Ray Noble. While with the latter, he composed "Harlem Nocturne" (1939) as a tribute to Duke Ellington. After service in World War II, Hagen began composing film scores, working for Twentieth Century-Fox on such movies as Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and Carousel. Moving to TV, he wrote the themes for Make Room for Daddy, I Spy and The Dick Van Dyke Show, among others. Next to "Harlem Nocturne," his best known composition was probably "The Fishin' Hole" on The Andy Griffith Show. The theme featured his whistling too! Hagen wrote two books on composing film scores, as well as Memoirs of the Famous Composer Nobody Ever Heard Of. Fine condition.
