EARLE HYMAN
Actor writes letter of thanks to John Willis, editor of Theatre World, for the birthday card
Autograph letter signed: "Earle" in black ink. 1 page, 5¾x4. October 25, 1983. Oslo,
Norway. In full: "Dear John, Bless you for the birthday card. You never forget! You're wonderful.
I'm here rehearsing in "Master Harold and the Boys". Hard work, but ok, very exciting! All my
admiring, fond best to you - Ever". While best known as Bill Cosby's dad Russell Huxtable on
The Cosby Show (1984-1992), Earle Hyman (1926-2017) has been appearing in films for
half a century, with almost sixty years to his name if you include a bit part in The Lost
Weekend (1945). Hyman has a second home in Norway, where he has appeared on stage and
television since the 1950s. John A. Willis (1916-2010), active in Theatre World from the
beginning, became its chief editor in 1965, holding that position until 2008. Willis is
regarded as one of the foremost theatre and film historians of the 20th century. While
producing (and presenting) the annual Theatre World Awards, Willis also served on the
nominating committee for the Tony Awards. Theatre World, which received its own Tony
for Excellence in Theatre in 2001, continues under chief editor Ben Hodges. Slightly toned.
Corners rounded. Ink slightly smeared throughout. Otherwise, fine condition.
