Byner, who played his college ball at East Carolina, starred in the NFL from 1984 to 1997
with the Cleveland Browns, Washington Redskins (1989-1993) and Baltimore Ravens. He
retired as the 16th leading rusher in League history (8,261 yards). He caught 512 passes
and scored 71 touchdowns. Despite this fine record, he is also remembered for "the
Fumble," when he fumbled on what would have been the game-tying touching for
Cleveland against the Denver Broncos in the AFC Championship game, January 17, 1988.
Since leaving the field he has been running back coach for four teams, most recently the
Jacksonville Jaguars, and has also worked in player development. On the 70th anniversary of
the Washington Redskins in 2002, Byner was named to the list of "70 greatest Redskins."
