EBE STIGNANI. Photograph signed: "Ebe Stignani/1953". B/w, 3¾x6. Name imprinted at lower left of image. Italian opera star Ebe Stignani (1904-1974) enjoyed a stage career of more than 30 years, singing all of the major Italian mezzo-soprano roles as well as works by Wagner, Brangäne and Saint-Saëns. Invited by Arturo Toscanini to sing the part of Princess Eboli in Verdi's Don Carlo at La Scala Milan in 1926, the year after she made her official debut in Naples, Stignani would go on to appear on stages all over the world. She made her first appearance at Covent Garden in 1937 and toured in such other European cities as Paris, Madrid and Berlin. A frequent performer in South America, Stignani starred at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, and she also toured the U.S., first appearing in San Francisco in 1930 and returning to tour extensively in the post-WWII years. Stignani is also known for her recordings of operatic arias. Minor surface creases and scratches (most not evident head on), light crease at hair. Name written (unknown hand) in ink on verso (no show through). Overall, fine condition.
