EBENEZER PROUT The musical theorist signs his name in pencil on this slip of paper Autograph Sentiment Signed: "Yours very sincerely,/ Ebenezer Prout" 3½x1 affixed to a 3¾x1¼ piece of paper. Ebenezer Prout (1835-1909) was an English musical theorist who also worked as a teacher and a composer. He studied at the University of London with aspirations of becoming a scholar, but ultimately decided to pursue a career in music. Although Proust briefly studied piano under Charles Salaman, he was mostly self-taught. He worked as a professor at the Crystal Palace School of Art and won a number of different esteemed awards and prizes before being appointed professor of harmony and composition at Royal Academy of Music in London in 1879. Around this time he also became music critic at the Athenaeum. Shortly following his beginning work as a professor of music in the University of Dublin in 1894, he began giving memorable public lectures. Toned. Corners and edges of both pieces of paper are worn. Edges of slip of paper containing signature are slightly jagged. Otherwise, fine condition.
