ED BEGLEY, SR.He signs an agreement with the Theatre Guild for a single 1960 TV appearance, on which he will be billed as "special guest star" above the title. Document signed: "Ed Begley", 2 pages (front and verso), 8½x11. New York, N.Y., 1960 April 18. Also signed "Armina Marshall" for the Theatre Guild. Begley signs an agreement to appear in a single TV broadcast on the standard AFTRA pay scale, understanding that his name as a "special guest star" will appear above the show's title. ED BEGLEY (1901-1970), who entered show business as a radio announcer (1931), won an Oscar as Best Supporting Actor in Sweet Bird of Youth (1962). Begley's other noted roles include Twelve Angry Men (1956) and The Unsinkable Molly Brown (1964). In the Broadway production of Inherit the Wind, he played 789 performances of the character meant to represent William Jennings Bryan, then in 1955 switched roles to play his nemesis, a thinly disguised Clarence Darrow, with equal skill. He is the father of Ed Begley, Jr. ARMINA MARSHALL, who first appeared on the Broadway stage in 1924, became a prominent playwright and producer. The Theatre Guild, which she and husband Lawrence Langer founded in 1919, still flourishes, having produced 228 Broadway plays as of 2002.Marshall and Langer received a Tony for the stage version of Sunrise at Campobello in 1958 and a special Tony (1961) for organizing the first repertory group to tour the world for the U.S. State Department, at President Kennedy's behest. Multiple staple holes at upper left and center margin. Lightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
