ED DODD
He signs a typed 1958 letter, forwarding an original Mark Trail cartoon
(included).
Typed Letter signed: "Ed Dodd", 1 page, 7¼x10½, with 3¼x3¼ newspaper
cartoon attached at bottom left (two surfaces). Lost Forest, Sandy Springs,
Georgia, 1958 September 4. To Emil R. Dern, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In
full: "Thank you for your appreciated letter of August 13th. Under
separate cover, I am sending you an original of a Mark Trail daily strip, which
I hope you will accept with my compliments. Sincerely yours". (The item
mentioned has been affixed in the lower left of the TLS.) Ed Dodd (1902-1991), a
youthful camp instructor and scoutmaster, began his cartoon Mark Trail in
1946. (Dodd created the stories; Tom Hill drew them.) Mark Trail, a
wildlife photographer loosely modeled on Dodd himself, was an outdoorsman and
conservationist. At its peak in the 1960s, the strip appeared in 500
newspapers. Mark Trail spin-offs included publications on camping and wildlife.
Dodd and Hill retired from the strip in 1978, but it remains in syndication
today. The year Dodd died, the US Congress named a section of the Appalachian
Trail in his native Georgia the Mark Trail Wilderness. Lost Forest was the name
of Dodd's home and studio in a Georgia woods, designed by Frank Lloyd
Wright. Fold crease, not near signature. Fine condition.
