EDGAR McELROY (DOOLITTLE RAIDER)
Signature: "Edgar E. McElroy", 5x3 card. McElroy has affixed his printed address label, which features a photo inset of the Iwo Jima flag raising, above his signature. Led by James "Jimmy" Doolittle, 80 men on 16 B-25 bombers took off from the carrier USS Hornet on April 18, 1942. The raid, which marked the first time fully loaded bombers took off from an aircraft carrier, was in retaliation for Japan's surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. "Doolittle's Raiders" hit targets in Tokyo, Yokohama and other cities and scored a huge victory for U.S. morale at a time when Japan's position in the Pacific seemed impregnable. Despite heavy anti-aircraft fire, Plane #13 pilot Lieutenant McElroy and crew attacked the Yokosuka Naval Base to bomb enemy shipping and supplies. One Japanese ship took a direct hit and was seen to fall over on its side, and a second was sheathed in flames when the B25 continued west towards China. The entire crew survived the flight and remained in Indo-China to fly missions for more than a year, and all five crew members survived the war despite an enviable record of combat missions. McElroy remained in the service until 1962, serving in Japan, Korea, the Mariana Islands, England, Germany, and Laos. Fine condition.
