The founder of NFL Films is shown shooting a live game in this 6x4
photograph
Photograph signed: "Ed Sabol/HOF 11". Color, 6x4. Ed Sabol
(1916-2015) founded NFL Films with his son, Steve Sabol, filming his
first NFL game during the 1962 Super bowl Championship between the New York
Giants and the Green Bay Packers. Originally established as Blair Motion
Pictures in 1962, the company became NFL films in 1964 when Sabol signed an
exclusive contract with the league to film and archive all of NFL's games. He
himself a champion swimmer, Sabol has earned several awards for his
dedication to sports media, including the 1991 Pete Rozelle Award (NFL), the
1987 Order of the Leather Helmet (NFL), and a 2003 Lifetime Achievement
Emmy. Sabol is the member of the Broadcast Pioneers Hall of Fame
(1996) and the Pro Football Hall of Fame (2011). His son Steve, who died
from brain cancer in 2012, once said about his father, "The only
other human endeavor more thoroughly captured on 16-mm film than the National
Football League is World War II." In 1995, Sabol stepped down from his
presidential position at NFL films, making way for his son who held the position
until his death. Fine condition.
