EDDIE CALVERT and ALMA COGAN
The English trumpeter and vocalist sign opposite sides of an album leaf. Rare signatures.
Signatures: "Eddie Calvert", 6½x4¾ album leaf. Printed photo of Calvert affixed in lower right. Also signed on verso: "Alma Cogan". English pop trumpet player EDDIE CALVERT (1922-1978) was billed "the Man with the Golden Trumpet" by British TV orchestra leader Stanley Black, and the term stayed with him. His version of "Oh My Papa" (1954) stayed #1 on the UK pop charts for 9 weeks, a record at the time, and became the first instrumental to sell 1 million copies there. He had another UK #1 hit, "Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White", the following year. Calvert performed the film score for The Man with the Golden Arm (1955). He moved to South Africa in the late 1960s. Traditional singer ALMA COGAN (1932-1966) was the most highly paid English female vocalist of the 1950s, landing 18 hits on the UK charts in that decade, starting with "Bell Bottom Blues" in 1954. Her first album, I Love to Sing, was released in 1958, and she topped readers' polls as Outstanding British Female Singer four times between 1956 and 1960. Cogan's popularity waned with the Beatles revolution of the 1960s, but she remained popular in club performance. She collapsed on a club tour of northern England, dying at age 34 of ovarian cancer. Lightly toned. Pencil notes (unknown hand) at top margins. Right edge lightly frayed. Otherwise, fine condition.
