EDDIE "LOCKJAW" DAVIS
Very rare publicity photograph of the famed American jazz tenor saxophonist.
Rare Photograph
inscribed and signed: "To Lilian!/Sincerely/Eddie Davis". B/w, 8x10 overall, image 7¼x8¾ (one surface). Shaw Artist Corporation publicity photograph picturing the performer and recording artist with his tenor saxophone. Captioned at lower margin. American jazz tenor saxophonist Edward Davis (1922-1986), who performed as Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, realized his dreams of creating his own unique tenor sound and leading his own groups. Davis, who got his start in the bands of Cootie Williams, Lucky Millinder, Andy Kirk and Louis Armstrong, lead his own groups from 1946, when he fronted Eddie Davis and His Beboppers. He later played with Count Basie's Orchestra (1952-1953, 1957, and occassionally between 1964-1973) as well as teaming up with Sonny Stitt in the 1950s and with fellow tenor saxophonist Johnny Griffin in a quintet (1960-1962). A popular recording artist as well as performer, Davis can be heard in several genres on a number of labels. Ink slightly beaded. Creased and soiled at blank margins and corners, upper right corner has been torn away. Surface creased, touching writing and facial image. Tackhead-sized stain on shirt. Overall, fair condition.
