Murphy was 19 when he was hired as one of the backup performers on the NBC comedy weekly Saturday Night Live. He became SNL's prime attraction due to his choice characterizations of Gumby, Mr. Robinson, Tyrone Green and Buckwheat. Murphy was hastily added to the cast of the 1982 comedy 48 Hours, and an eight-million-per-picture movie star was born. He has since appeared in numerous films, some of which include Trading Places (1983), Beverly Hills Cop (1984, 1987), The Golden Child (1986), Coming to America (1987) and The Nutty Professor (1996).
