EDGAR BERGEN, CHARLIE McCARTHY, and CEDRIC HARDWICKE
Edgar Bergen, Charlie McCarthy and Cedric Hardwicke sign an album leaf.
Signature: "Edgar Bergen/Charlie" and on verso "Good Luck/Cedric Hardwicke", 4½x3¾ album leaf. Ventriloquist EDGAR BERGEN (1903-1978) and his dummy CHARLIE McCARTHY were first heard over Rudy Vallee's radio program on December 17, 1936 and were an immediate hit. Bergen was promptly signed, and Bergen and McCarthy starred on NBC and later on CBS from 1937-1956. Charlie McCarthy was a sarcastic boy who managed to get into trouble, which always worried Edgar Bergen. McCarthyisms included: "Ambition is just an excuse for those without the good sense to be lazy" and "Hard work never killed anyone, but why take the chance?" Bergen signed McCarthy's name. British actor Sir CEDRICK HARDWICKE (1883-1964), who was knighted for his acting in 1934, was called the finest actor in the world by playwright George Bernard Shaw. Hardwicke, who had appeared in a number of stage plays, including Shaw's Major Barbara, made his film debut in 1926 in Nelson and continued to make films through 1964, the year of his death. His long list of film credits include Les Miserables (1935), King Solomon's Mines (1937), The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1939), Wilson (1944), The Picture of Dorian Gray (1945), I Remember Mama (1948), Around the World in 80 Days (1956), The Ten Commandments (1956) and The Pumpkin Eater (1964, his last film). Irregular right margin. Ink date (unknown hand) at lower right. Fine condition.
