EDGAR BERGEN
Bergen signed this $289.12 salary check, made out to Rose Bertold, in 1966.
Check signed "Edgar Bergen" in blue ink. 8¼x3 with perforated top, bottom and left edge. May 31, 1966. Check no. 8402 for $289.12, made out to Rose Bertold and drawn from a special account that Bergen had at the Sunset-Wetherly branch of Bank of American in Hollywood, California. This appears to be a salary check, according to manuscript notes in black ink in the upper left corner; these notes indicate "Sal May 1966" of $300 and deductions of $10.88. Bergen (1903-1978, born in Chicago, Illinois) and his ventriloquist's dummy, Charlie McCarthy, were first heard over Rudy Vallee's radio program on December 17, 1936 and were an immediate hit. Bergen was promptly signed, and Bergen and McCarthy starred on NBC and later on CBS from 1937 to 1956. Charlie McCarthy was a sarcastic boy who managed to get into trouble, which always worried Edgar Bergen. McCarthyisms included: "Ambition is just an excuse for those without the good sense to be lazy" and "Hard work never killed anyone, but why take the chance?" Bergen was the father of Emmy Award-winning actress Candice Bergen. Lightly toned and creased. Normal bank stamps and cancellation holes, which touch signature. Otherwise in fine condition.
