EDGAR BERGEN
8½x17 contract for the entertainer's appearance at an Indianapolis
club at the rate of $4,500 per week + a 2/6 pro rate
Contract signed: "Edgar Bergen", in blue ink, 8½x17. Contract
from the William Morris Agency for Bergen's appearance at the B & B Club in
Indianapolis for 8 to 9 days, at the rate of $4,500 per week + a 2/6 pro rate.
Edgar Bergen (1903-1978, born in Chicago, Illinois) and his
ventriloquist's dummy, Charlie McCarthy, were first heard over Rudy Vallee's
radio program on December 17, 1936 and were an immediate hit. Bergen was
promptly signed, and Bergen and McCarthy starred on NBC and later on CBS from
1937 to 1956. Charlie McCarthy was a sarcastic boy who managed to get into
trouble, which always worried Edgar Bergen. McCarthyisms included: "Ambition is
just an excuse for those without the good sense to be lazy" and "Hard work never
killed anyone, but why take the chance?" Bergen was the father of Emmy
Award-winning actress Candice Bergen. Surface creases throughout. Multiple
folds. Soiled. Large section of top left corner torn off. Tear on perforated
edge of bottom right margin. Top right corner torn. Ink notes (unknown hand).
Some ink in contract haloed, but legible. Small tears and creases along edges.
Otherwise, fine condition.
