Case", in full: "I take much pleasure, pray believe, in granting
your request, and am Faithfully yours". A versatile American author,
Edgar Fawcett (1847-1904) wrote novels, poems, plays, and even an opera
libretto. His most highly regarded novels, such as Purple and Fine Linen
(1873) and New York (1898) satirize high society. Other works, like
Solarian (1889), anticipate science fiction. Fawcett also wrote many
children's stories. His last years were spent in London, where he died in 1904.
