EDGAR FAWCETT
He penned this poem, one of his own, at New York's Union Club.
Autograph Poem signed: "Edgar Fawcett", 1p, 8x10. New York, N.Y., n.d. His poem "Confidence", handwritten by Fawcett, in full: "Think not that you may calmly tread/The loftier height that thousands miss,/Till you have measured all the dread/And darkness of the abyss./That foot which climbs where towers most high/The peak of blended sun and snow,/Is always guardianed by an eye/That dares to look below!" In lower right corner, he has added: "Union Club/21st St. & 5th Ave. N.Y. City". Ink note (unknown hand): "New York City" and "By" [before signature]. A versatile American author, Edgar Fawcett (1847-1904) wrote novels, poems, plays, and even an opera libretto. His most highly regarded novels, such as Purple and Fine Linen (1873) and New York (1898) satirize high society. Other works, like Solarian (1889), anticipate science fiction. Fawcett also wrote many children's stories. Slightly soiled. Binder holes at left edge. Minor nicks at lower edge. Paper separations at left and right edges repaired with mounting tape on verso, which shows through lightly. Otherwise, fine condition.
