EDGAR KENNEDY
Inscribed sepia image, with the exasperated expression that made him "the king of the slow burn."
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Joe/Yours Truly/Edgar Kennedy". Sepia, 8x10. Accompanied by original mailing envelope, addressed by an unknown hand. Edgar Kennedy (1890-1948) broke into silent films in 1914, often cast as a villain in Mack Sennett comedies. He later excelled in other comic roles, co-starring with Laurel and Hardy, Our Gang and, in his last picture (Unfaithfully Yours, 1948) Doris Day. He made over 100 two-reelers for RKO studios, known collectively as his "Mr. Average Man" comedies. In these he played the long-suffering husband, a prototype of so many future TV sitcoms. He was in demand to play annoyed and frustrated characters, like the irate lemonade vendor in the Marx Brothers' Duck Soup (1933). Kennedy died of throat cancer one day before a Hollywood testimonial dinner was scheduled in his honor. Diagonal crease top edge 2" from left corner to right edge 2½" from lower corner passing through inscription and signature. Corners lightly worn.
