EDGAR KENNEDY
The silent movie villain turned comic star inscribes an album leaf in
pencil.
Inscribed signature: "To Mabelle/from/Edgar Kennedy" in pencil, 5½x4½
album leaf. Edgar Kennedy (1890-1948) broke into silent films in 1914, often
cast as a villain in Mack Sennett comedies. He later excelled in other comic
roles, co-starring with Laurel and Hardy, Our Gang and, in his last
picture (Unfaithfully Yours, 1948) Doris Day. He made over 100
two-reelers for RKO studios, known collectively as his "Mr. Average Man"
comedies. In these he played the long-suffering husband, a prototype
of so many future TV sitcoms. Kennedy died of throat cancer one day before a
Hollywood testimonial dinner was scheduled in his honor. Soiled in blank lower
right. Otherwise, fine condition.
