EDGAR RICE BURROUGHS
Edgar Rice Burroughs signs this check for $50.00
Check signed: "ER Burroughs", 7x3. September 10, 1946. Check No. B 931, drawn on the account of Edgar Rice Burroughs at Citizens National Trust & Savings Bank of Los Angeles. Payable for $50.00 to "Clerc Marj". Endorsed on verso: "Clerc Marj/Clerc Marj Interiors/by HA Campbell". In September 1945, the year before he wrote this check, Burroughs, who had served as a war correspondent in Hawaii during WWII, suffered angina attacks and was confined to bed, delaying his return to the U.S. mainland. He finally left for Los Angeles in November 1945, in a weakened state, and would die on March 19, 1950, three and a half years after he wrote this check. Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875-1950), is best known as the creator of "Tarzan of the Apes", whom he introduced to readers in his 1914 novel of the same name. Over the years, his "Ape Man" appeared in 20 novels (printed in 50 languages with sales of 20 million copies) and was featured in motion pictures, radio serials, television shows and a comic strip. Burroughs also wrote science fiction (his first sale was a serialized version of a Martian tale), crime novels and two Western novels. Lightly creased. Light show through of bank stamp on verso at "E". Bank cancellation holes at two words of writing. Otherwise, fine condition.
