Black wool V-neck gown designed by James Galanos, obtained from the estate of the late Ernie Kovacs and his recently deceased widow, Edie Adams
Dress, unsigned. A heavy, wool crepe V-neck, straight skirted, chiffon lined, floor length gown. Top stitched belt with gold grommets that wraps across the low cut back, secured with hook and snap. This dress, designed by James Galanos for Amelia Gray, owner of a boutique on Wilshire Boulevard, Los Angeles, was sold to Edie Adams, who wore it. It was part of the Ernie Kovacs/Edie Adams estate. Singer and comedian EDIE ADAMS (1927-2008), born Elizabeth Edith Enke in Kingston, Pennsylvania, appeared on TV's popular Ernie Kovacs Show in the early 1950s, and married Kovacs in 1954 (the couple was married until his death in 1962). Known to television audiences for her commercials for Muriel Cigars, she also appeared in several feature films, including The Apartment (1960) and The Best Man (1964). Adams, who received a Tony Award as Daisy Mae in Li'l Abner (1955), portrayed Mae West in a TV biography of her late husband, Ernie Kovacs: Between the Laughter (1984). James Galanos (b. 1925) was an award-winning fashion designer whose clients included First Lady Nancy Reagan. Galanos' "ready to wear" dresses started at $300 in the early 1960s. Dessication to the cup insets could be easily removed or replaced. Good condition.
