EDITH M. THOMAS
She pens and inscribes one of her poems.
Autograph Poem inscribed and signed: "There once was a boy who
could 'talk a lot'/And - stranger yet than was said or sung/There once was a
woman who often forgot/For days together to use her tongue!/And I sing of them
both, as best I can,/This strange, strange woman; this rare young man/Edith M.
Thomas/for Eddie J. Delaney", 3½x2. Edith Matilda Thomas
(1854-1925) was working as a typesetter when established poet Helen Hunt
Thomas urged her to send some of her poems for publication. The response was
immediate; poems by Thomas were soon appearing in Scribner's, The
Atlantic Monthly, The Century, and other prominent periodicals. Her
first collection, A New Year's Masque and Other Poems, was published in
1885. Thomas moved to New York City in 1887, now employed by
Harper's. Although she published over 300 poems between 1890 and 1909,
her writing could not keep up with the demand from literary magazines. Thomas'
poetry, generally light in tone, employed classical rhyme and meter. Her most
critically acclaimed work may have been Lyrics and Sonnets (1887).
Selected Poems appeared posthumously in 1926. Lightly toned. Adhesive
residue on vero. Fine condition.
