Clipped signature of the Irish novelist
Clipped Signature: "Edith OE/Somerville", 2x¾ Irish novelist
Edith Anna Oenone Somerville (1858-1949), who typically signed as she has
here, wrote a series of popular novels in collaboration with her cousin,
Violet Martin, under the pen name Somerville and Ross. When Violet Martin
died in 1915, Somerville continued to write as Somerville and Ross, claiming
that she was in communication with her cousin by séance. The first of 14
novels written while Martin lived was Irish Cousin (1889). The last of 9
more novels, published the year Somerville died, was Maria and Some Other
Dogs. A skilled painter, Somerville also illustrated children's books,
and books about her hobby, fox hunting. She also finished a book written by
her brother, retired British admiral Henry Somerville, after he was assassinated
by the IRA in 1936. Lightly creased and soiled. Otherwise, fine
condition.
