EDMUND H. GARRETT
Signed handwritten letter of the American artist and author, best known for his illustrations of the Legends of King Arthur. Signed twice! Extremely rare!
Autograph letter double signed: "E.H. Garrett" and in postscript, "E.H.G", in faded black ink, 1p, 4½x6¾. Winchester, January 26, 1895. To "Dear Sir" Mr. Robert Broos, in full: "Can you give me the address of F. W. Bourdiller of London? You will greatly oblige. Yours truly" and postscript, "I called to ask you for it the other day but my meeting with John Wilson there put my errand out of my head." American artist Edmund Henry Garrett (1853-1929) is best known for illustrating the legends of King Arthur. A New York native, Garrett was an established artist of the Boston Art Club and the Copley Society of Art, debuting his first wood engraving in 1879. During the 1880s he travelled Europe on tours with world famous impressionist Childe Hassam. In 1884 he exhibited his popular watercolors A Street in Granada and El Mirador de la Reina, Alhambra at Pennsylvania Academy. His other illustrations, such as Ballads of Romance & History by Susan Coolidge (1887) and Legends of King Arthur and His Court (1901), also toured the U.S. and France, notably at the Paris Salon. In the year that this was written, Garrett completed his illustrations for Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre (1895). Pencil notes (unknown hand) at left edge at top left corner. Toned and slightly creased. Small tear at top left edge, worn with stain. Adhesive residue on verso. Pencil erasure marks at top right corner. Slightly soiled. Otherwise, fine condition.
