good wishes/Edmund Muskie". B/w, 7¼x9¼ image, 10x13¼ overall (one surface).
The photo was taken by famed photographer Fabian Bachrach (1917-2010), whose
portraits of Presidents Kennedy and Reagan, and of many public figures, are
celebrated. Signature light in areas but legible. Otherwise fine condition.
Accompanied by Bachrach presentation folder (11x13½). Right edge ragged. Lightly
toned. Otherwise fine condition. Edmund Muskie (1914-1996), a navy veteran of
World War II, was Governor of Maine (1955-1959) and U.S. Senator from that
state (1959-1980). He was the Democratic Party's Vice Presidential
nominee in 1968, and the early frontrunner for the Presidential nomination four
years later until, during the New Hampshire primary, he appeared to cry
while defending his wife from a harsh newspaper attack. As a Senator, Muskie was
a principal architect of the landmark environmental legislation of the early
1970s, working successfully to build bipartisan support for it. Muskie
concluded his public service as U.S. Secretary of State (1980-1981). Two
