EDMUND MUSKIE. Inscribed signature: "To Mary Perlman/Edmund S.
Muskie", 5x3 card. Edmund Muskie (1914-1996), a navy veteran of World War
II, was Governor of Maine (1955-1959) and U.S. Senator from that state
(1959-1980). He was the Democratic Party's Vice Presidential nominee in
1968, and the early frontrunner for the Presidential nomination four years
later until, during the New Hampshire primary, he appeared to cry while
defending his wife from a harsh newspaper attack. As a Senator, Muskie was a
principal architect of the landmark environmental legislation of the early
1970s, working successfully to build bipartisan support for it. Muskie
concluded his public service as U.S. Secretary of State (1980-1981). Lightly
