EDMUND S. MUSKIE
The Governor of Maine writes to editor Richard L. Tobin, sending an
essay he wrote based on one of his senate speeches
Typed letter signed: "Edmund S. Muskie", in blue ink, 1 page,
8x10½. May 26, 1966. United States Senate. In part: "Dear Mr. Tobin:
Thank you very much for you letter of April 20th in which you indicate an
interest in an article for the Saturday Review. I have taken the liberty
of preparing a 2,000-word piece, based on my Senate speech, which I would prefer
to be an "inside article" as you suggested, and hope that it will be acceptable
for publication [item not included]". Edmund Muskie
(1914-1996), a navy veteran of World War II, was Governor of Maine
(1955-1959) and U.S. Senator from that state (1959-1980). He was the
Democratic Party's Vice Presidential nominee in 1968, and the early frontrunner
for the Presidential nomination four years later until, during the New
Hampshire primary, he appeared to cry while defending his wife from a harsh
newspaper attack. As a Senator, Muskie was a principal architect of the
landmark environmental legislation of the early 1970s, working successfully
to build bipartisan support for it. Muskie concluded his public service as U.S.
Secretary of State (1980-1981). Richard L. Tobin (1910-1995) was a long
time reporter and editor for the New York Herald Tribune, and was at the writing
of this letter with The Saturday Review. Light surface creases. Staple holes in
top margin. Corners slightly worn. Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine
condition.
