EDMUND MUSKIE. TLS: "Edmund S Muskie" as U.S. Senator from Maine, 1p, 8x10½. Washington, D.C., 1972 November 28. On United States Senate letterhead to George Bookman, Assistant Vice President, New York Stock Exchange, Inc., New York, New York. In full: "Thank you for your letter of November 15 and the attached news release concerning discussions to be held next year between Russian and United States trade officials. I hope that you will continue to keep me informed as to the progress such discussions might make. Once again, I appreciate your contacting me. With best wishes, I am Sincerely". Edmund Muskie (1914-1996), a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII, was Governor of Maine (1955-1959) before becoming a Democratic U.S. Senator from Maine (1959-1980). As a Senator, Muskie was a principal architect of the landmark environmental legislation of the early 1970s, working successfully to build bipartisan support for it. He was the Democratic Party's Vice Presidential nominee in 1968, and the early frontrunner for the Presidential nomination four years later until, during the New Hampshire primary, he appeared to cry while defending his wife from a harsh newspaper attack. Muskie concluded his public service as U.S. Secretary of State (1980-1981). Slightly creased with folds, lower horizontal fold at the descender of the "E" in Edmund. Recipient's address has been crossed off in ink, "EM" written in margin above type. Fine condition.
