from Maine, 1p, 8x10½. Washington, D.C., 1972 November 28. On United
States Senate letterhead to George Bookman, Assistant Vice President, New York
Stock Exchange, Inc., New York, New York. In full: "Thank you for your
letter of November 15 and the attached news release concerning discussions to
be held next year between Russian and United States trade officials. I hope that
you will continue to keep me informed as to the progress such discussions might
make. Once again, I appreciate your contacting me. With best wishes, I am
Sincerely". Edmund Muskie (1914-1996), a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII, was
Governor of Maine (1955-1959) before becoming a Democratic U.S.
Senator from Maine (1959-1980). As a Senator, Muskie was a principal
architect of the landmark environmental legislation of the early 1970s,
working successfully to build bipartisan support for it. He was the Democratic
Party's Vice Presidential nominee in 1968, and the early frontrunner for the
Presidential nomination four years later until, during the New Hampshire
primary, he appeared to cry while defending his wife from a harsh newspaper
attack. Muskie concluded his public service as U.S. Secretary of State
(1980-1981). Slightly creased with folds, lower horizontal fold at the descender
of the "E" in Edmund. Recipient's address has been crossed off in ink, "EM"
written in margin above type. Fine condition.
