Edmund Muskie (1914-1996), a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII, was Governor of Maine (1955-1959) before becoming a Democratic U.S. Senator from Maine (1959-1980). As a Senator, Muskie was a principal architect of the landmark environmental legislation of the early 1970s, working successfully to build bipartisan support for it. He was the Democratic Party's Vice Presidential nominee in 1968, and the early frontrunner for the Presidential nomination four years later until, during the New Hampshire primary, he appeared to cry while defending his wife from a harsh newspaper attack. Muskie concluded his public service as U.S. Secretary of State (1980-1981). Slightly creased with folds, lower horizontal fold at the descender of the "E" in Edmund.
