EDNA LYALL (ADA ELLEN BAYLY)
She laments that recovery from malarial fever will require her not to write books for two years! She has signed with her real name and with her pen name, accompanied by original mailing envelope
Autograph Letter signed: "Ellen Bayly/'Edna Lyall'", 2 pages (front and verso), 5x8. 6 College Road, Eastbourne (England), 1890 November 21. To "Miss M. Crommelin", London, in full: "I enclose a short 'contribution' for the book. Since I saw you I have been terribly ill with malarial fever contracted during my visit to Italy last March, & tho' practically well now I am not to write for another two years - a great blow to me for its seems like missing half my life. It will be such a pleasure to see you when I am in London & please remember your promise to come & see me some day. Yours very truly". Accompanied by envelope addressed in her hand with facsimile of her pen name in the return address spot. Edna Lyall was the pen name of English novelist Ada Ellen Bayly (1857-1903). The first of her 18 novels, Won By Waiting, was published in 1879, but came to prominence with the popular We Two (1884) and In the Golden Days (1885). Her works championed religious and political toleration. She spoke out in favor of Irish Home Rule, and against the Boer War. One horizontal fold. Otherwise, fine condition.
