EDNA FERBER
Refreshed from her work in Hollywood by a week at her retreat in
Maine, Ferber wrote this chatty letter to Kitty Carlisle Hart. The letter comes
from Hart's estate.
Autograph Letter signed: "Edna", 1 page, 7¼x10½. Maine Chance
Farm, Mount Vernon, Maine, 1954 September 7. On personal letterhead to Kitty
Carlisle Hart. In full: "In these past weeks, Kitty dear, I've thought so
much about you. From Dorothy Rodgers I've learned what a rough time you've had.
You're a great girl, and that's my story, and I'll stick to it. I do hope that
things have now cleared a bit, with Chris probably in school and the weather
less horrendous. Ten weeks of Hollywood sent me flying up here. One week of rest
and quiet and I feel nearly normal. I'll be home this week. If you're not too
harassed I'll call you. My love to you". American author Edna Ferber
(1885-1968), who received the 1925 Pulitzer Prize in Fiction for So Big,
also wrote Show Boat (1926), Cimarron (1929) and Giant
(1952), and she co-authored Dinner at Eight with George S. Kaufman
(1932). Ferber was a member of the celebrated Algonquin Roundtable of literary
wits in the 1920s. This letter is addressed to, and was in the estate of,
versatile singer, actress and TV personality Kitty Carlisle (1910-2007), who was
still performing a one-woman show as late as 2006. She was married to playwright
Moss Hart until his death in 1961. Christopher Hart, the first of her two
children, was born in 1948. Edna Ferber's novels were much in demand in
Hollywood in the 1950s. So Big had been filmed in 1953, with Giant
and Cimarron soon to follow. The author may have been in Hollywood in
connection with these projects. Heavily toned. Two horizontal mailing folds.
Bottom left corner creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
