EDNA FERBER
The author writes a letter to the wife of her literary agent
TLS: "Edna Ferber", 1p, 7¼x10½. 730 Park Avenue, 1955 September 30. To Mrs. Maria
Horch, Franz J. Horch Agency, New York. In full: "Ever since our lunch a week ago, I have
been wanting to write or call you. I was a complete mess that day -- from first to last -- and I
really feel I owe you an apology. I was in considerable pain (which, I am happy to say, seems now
to have departed) and I was so distrait that I didn't even offer you a drink before luncheon. But I
know you are kind and understanding and will not hold all this against me. I am glad we asked
Desch for a three-installment payment. I am sure you know the old German saying which runs
roughly: 'Esistkeinenahrdasfragt...' and so forth." Ferber, who received the 1925 Pulitzer
Prize in Fiction for So Big, also wrote Show Boat (1926), Cimarron (1929) and Giant (1952)
and co-authored Dinner at Eight with George S. Kaufman (1932). Lightly creased. Folds,
horizontal fold touches signature. Fine condition.
