In full: "I cannot be included in a book designed to present the discriminations and persecutions suffered by American Jews (or Catholics or Protestants or any other sect)." EDNA FERBER (1885-1968), who had received the 1925 Pulitzer Prize in Fiction for So Big, also wrote Show Boat (1926), Cimarron (1929) and Giant (1952) and co-authored Dinner at Eight with George S. Kaufman (1932). The year after she wrote this letter, Ferber, considered the greatest woman novelist of her time, published One Basket, a collection of short stories. CATHERINE OWENS PEARE wrote a number of biographies of both historic and contemporary subjects, including William Penn, Helen Keller and Aaron Copland. Lightly creased with folds, horizontal fold touches signature. Lightly rippled and stained at blank right edge.
