The French military painter signs a handwritten letter to a female friend
thanking her for her gesture of friendship
Autograph letter signed "Edouard Detaille", 1 page, 4½x5½. Paris,
France circa 1892. Addressed by Detaille on verso, which has French
stamp affixed, postmarked Paris, March 21, 1892. In French, translated. In
full: "Dear friend, Thank you with all my heart for your warmest
congratulations and for your gesture of friendship which gave me great pleasure.
I will try to stay considering I could see Marie-Victorin. With all my
friendship,". French artist Jean Baptiste Edouard
Detaille (1847-1912) is best known for his military art, which
realistically captured scenes from the Napoleonic Wars, the Franco-Prussian War
and the Battle of Fonteno. At the time of this letter, he was focusing on the
campaigns of Napoléon, painting realistic battle scenes, including
dramatic cavalry charges. Tape remnants at lower blank margin. Slightly soiled.
Perforated edges. Ink blots at 2 words of address. Overall, fine
condition.
